What is the Gallery List?
Over time, we were using our database of galleries more than the Jag itself. It can be difficult to determine why a show gets lots of reviews and what’s next-door gets bupkis.

But there are a bazillion galleries.
The privilege of being in the art capital of the world. When hitting an area, our policy is: “if there’s a show, go.” The serendipity is continually rewarded. Don’t have the time? Prioritize galleries using the , and designations.

No thanks, there are a ton of gallery lists already out there.
True that. Here are the reasons we ended up creating this one:
It is comprehensive, with (nearly) every gallery, museum and space in the city.
It is convenient, with all the info located at a single location.
It is updated regularly, hardly a week going by without updates and corrections.
It is geographically organized, to facilitate jags.
It organizes into categories, to provide a sense of what’s up those stairs or a block over.
It has imbedded links, so smartphone can quickly get detailed info.

So how many galleries are in NY anyway?
Define ‘gallery.’ There are salons with art. Bars with art. (Both worth a look when in the area, btw.) As of 11’11, the List had 1,162 entries. But the focus is on the places that have shows. Most private galleries are not included, for example. Gaia knows how many of those there are. The ideal gallery is one with regular shows and regular hours. That is, using the List, the first four categories. At last count, the List has 626 of those.
